Ex-pastor's murder trial hears from late wife's friend

The first-degree murder trial of a former pastor accused of drugging and drowning his pregnant wife continued in a Toronto court today with testimony from one of his wife's friends.

Lynette Him, the trial's final witness, told the jury about one of the last times she spoke withKarissaGrandinebefore she drowned in her bathtub in Scarborough in October 2011.

Her husband PhilipGrandinewas arrested six months later. Investigators said they had found the sedative drugLorazepam, which had not been prescribed to her, in her blood.

Before Grandinedied, Him testified that she described having been sick after her husband made her a banana smoothie.

BothGrandineswere ill, but she had been vomiting and was in and out of consciousness, according to Him.

"Like a day of her life had been stolen from her," Him told the court.

PhilipGrandinetold police he found his wife unconscious in the bathtub upon returning from a jog.

"It was awful," he said during an interview with police. "It was the worst feeling of my life, that [helplessness] is the worst feeling of my life."

She was still in the tub when paramedics arrived and the water had not been drained.Grandinetold police he couldn't lift her out. She was five months pregnant at the time of her death.

The prosecution alleges Grandine murdered his wife so he could continue his relationship with another woman, 36-year-old Elaine Florentino, who took the stand last week; testifying that Karissa Grandine knew about the affair.

Karissa Grandine was "very sad about the circumstances of their marriage," Him said on Wednesday.

She added Grandine was "very willing" to raise the child on her own if the marriage could not be repaired.

Philip Grandine did not take the stand today. The court will hear closing arguments on Thursday.
