Deadmau5 settles dispute with Fringe show

Toronto electronic musician Deadmau5 has settled a dispute with a play that bears his name after its creators added a disclaimer that the show is a parody.

Toronto electronic musicianDeadmau5hassettled a dispute witha play that bears his nameafter itscreatorsadded a disclaimer that the show isa parody.

Deadmouse: The Musicalis set to run during the Toronto Fringe Festival, starting July 3 at the Al Green Theatre.

Deadmau5,whose real name is Joel Zimmerman, recentlyissued a cease-and-desist letter through his lawyerto itsproducer,claiming the titleinfringes on his trademarked name, which is pronounced "deadmouse."

Zimmerman said on Twitterthe independent stage production was an example of "how not to be creative."

"While I appreciate their intent, theyREALLY went about this the wrong way and don't fully understand how this diminishes certain endeavours," he added.The dust-up has been featured on musicwebsitesall over the world and was briefly trending on social media.

Zimmerman postedthe letteronline, as he has done in other cases.He also took to Twitter last year when he was sued by Disney over his on-stage costume,which includesMickey Mouse-like ears.

Love of house music

The online description of the play now includes a disclaimer.

"Just so there's no confusionDeadmousethe Musicalis not written byDeadmau5or endorsed byDeadmau5. It is a parody. It was written out of love of house musicculture,"it reads.

The play is directed byDale Millerand was written, composed and produced byRafe Malach.It is described as"a musical about a mouse who wants to be a house DJ but is discriminated against forbeing a mouse."

Other characters also have cheekilymisspelled dance musicians' names, such as David Gouddaand Avicheese for chart-toppersDavid GuettaandAvicii.

Zimmerman signalled on Twitter he is fine with the disclaimer and considers the matter closed.
