While government, industry and environmental groups continue to wrestle with historic water pollution in Lake Superior to this day, a number of large-scale efforts have already succeeded in cleaning up old hotspots.

One of the most notorious was a large patch of creosote, PCBs and other toxic chemicals that sat in Thunder Bay harbour, just off the shore near the former site of Northern Wood Preservers.

That cocktail came to be known as 'The Blob.'

After decades of study, the mess was finally cleaned up in the late '90s and early-2000s, according to the Thunder Bay Remedial Action Plan.
