Probe into Wasaya Airways crash near Pickle Lake begins: TSB

Investigators have begun looking into Friday's fatal Wasaya Airways cargo plane crash in northwestern Ontario.

The Transportation Safety Board sent two investigators to the site, which is located about 30 km north of Pickle Lake. A pilot and lone occupant of the aircraft was found by rescuers on Fridaynight.

The regional manager for the Transportation Safety Board based in Winnipeg told CBC News the initial investigation will take about 10 days.

This includes "examining and documenting the wreckage to find pieces for further lab analysis," Eric Vermette said.

"We'll be examining terrain features, weather conditions at the time of the occurrence, [and] any communication with air traffic control."

Investigators will also look at maintenance and pilot training records and interview witnesses. After that, it will be determined whether a full investigation is warranted.

Vermette says the aircraft will be left at a secure site and some items from the aircraft will be kept for analysis.
