Thunder Bay recreation programs, facilities undergo city review

Thunder Bay will undertake a review of its recreation facilities and programs this summer.

A consultant will look at programming, such as what is offered in playgrounds, and what activities are geared to older adults.

The review will also examine facilities like arenas, splash pads, the 55-plus centre and Prince Arthur's Landing.

The city's corporate project manager said the needs of the community do change over time.

"Typically, every 12-to-15 years, you dust off the plan and you make sure that you're spending the money and the resources appropriately," Lou Morrow said, adding that it will take about a year to complete the review.

Thunder Bay residents will also be able to give their input.

"The goal is to direct the investment of both time and money, with respect to recreational facilities and programs," Morrow said.

"We'll be looking at enhancing customer service towards the expectations and the needs required. Basically, align services with strategic goals and the vision and mission of the city."

Master plan reviews are also ongoing for the city's parks and Boulevard Lake. The Chippewa Park master plan was recently reviewed as well.
