The Thunder Bay Conservatory just received a gift of 700 tulip bulbs from the Dutch government. And they have big .. colourful plans.

The Thunder Bay Conservatory will be awash in tulips next spring, all to mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands at the end of the Second World War.

The conservatory is one of 140 organizations across Canada receiving a Dutch-Canadian Friendship Tulip Garden from the Canadian Garden Council.

The head of the Friends of the Thunder Bay Conservatory said the group's application noted Thunder Bay's connection to the Netherlands during the Second World War.

"The Lake Superior Scottish Regiment were actually the troops that fought in the Netherlands, and there were a lot of war brides that came over from the Netherlands to Thunder Bay specifically," Kathleen Ott said.

The Manitouwadge Community Memorial Gardens and Pic Mobert First Nation also received tulip gardens.
