Thunder Bay police say 33-year-old man is dead after standoff at Kingsway Inn

The man involved in a stand off with Thunder Bay police overnight at the Kingsway Inn is dead. The standoff ended just before 7 a.m. Wednesday when the 33-year-old was discovered at the scene and transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A man involved in a stand off with Thunder Bay police overnight at the Kingsway Inn is dead.

The standoff ended just before 7 a.m. Wednesdaymorning when the 33-year-old was discovered at the scene and transported to Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centrewhere he was pronounced dead.

Thunder Bay police spokesperson, Chris Adams, said police were called to the south side motel just before midnight onTuesdayand an incident command was set up to deal with the man, believed to be armed, who wasbarricaded in one of the rooms.

When contacted after the stand off, Adams said, "We made an entry into a hotel room at the Kingsway early this morning (Wednesday) to discover an unconscious male who was transported to hospital."

The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) will now be investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.

That means Thunder Bay police will not be commenting further on the case since it's now an SIU investigation.
