With less then a month left to go in an ambitious fundraising campaign, the United Way of Thunder Bay is approaching the half-way point of its $2,659,000 target.

United Way of Thunder Bay campaign co-chair, Mike Nitz, says the campaign has reached $1,287,481 so far, but they're not done yet.

"There are a number of employee campaigns still taking place, along with some fundraising events," he said in a news release on Tuesday."We typically see a lot of dollars come in closer to the end of the campaign and that's what we're hoping for again this year."

Nitz said they set a goal of close to $3 million this fall, based on the needs of the community.

"Each year the needs in our community increases," Nitz said, "we know this because each year our allocations committee made up of over 30 volunteers, goes through funding applications from local agencies."

Nitz said the campaign is working to address not only the symptoms of problems, but also the root problems.

"We need your generosity to make this a reality," Nitz said in a campaign call-out.

The donation deadline is December 31.
