A disc golfer in Thunder Bay wants his fellow players to make it easier for more young people to get into the sport.

Juan Baztarrica started the Birch Point Disc Exchange, after finding lost discs near the Birch Point course at Boulevard Lake.

He said the exchange will loan out the equipment to youth groups, like Creighton Youth Services, to give access to the sport, that may not be otherwise available.

"The discs will be donated by just avid disc golfers that have an addiction and have way too many discs," Baztarrica said, "or, they're going to be ones that were found and never claimed. Ones that end up in the lake, or just found in the bush."

Disc golf is played much like traditional golf. Instead of a ball and clubs, however, players use a flying disc, or Frisbee.- Professional Disc Golf Association

"We always try and call the numbers on the discs to try and get them back to their rightful owners, or claimed, but we'll now have a use for those lost discs," he said.

Baztarrica said he hopes to have the free exchange up and running in the next couple of weeks.

The exchange will run on Facebook, with the discs available for sign out at The Loop.

"They can just go to the Loop, sign out the discs they need for the people to play, and return them the next day, or as soon as they have a chance to return them for someone else to use."
