City to consider conservatory's fate

Thunder Bay city council will consider Monday night if it wants to make immediate improvements to the Centennial Conservatory to keep it open.

After glass panels began falling from the ceiling, the city closed the conservatory earlier this year, citing safety concerns.

But documents obtained by CBC News show that city staff reported problems with the glass at least as far back as 2009.

That's when a report was produced on how to make the conservatory more energy-efficient.

It recommended the city invest in the building and change the glass panels to a clear plastic, as well as install a net just below the ceiling, to catch any falling glass.

A report going to Thunder Bay city council Monday will kick off the city's Core Business Review.

The first phase calls for the closure of Municipal Golf Course this fall, as well as the Conservatory review.
