Kathleen Wynne continues tour of northern Ontario, feds to follow

As the premier of Ontario continues her tour across the region, several politicians at the federal level are getting ready to visit the north.

Today, federal finance minister Bill Morneau will be in Sudbury, as will the minister of small business and tourism, Bardish Chagger.

Later this month, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet with 30 cabinet ministers for a retreat in Sudbury.

Nipissing University political science professor David Tabachnick says he doesn't anticipate any major announcements for the north, despite all the political visits.

He says the natural resource sector is on the minds of many in this region.

"This has to be top of mind for many politicians as well that this is something that this region wants," he told CBC News.

"And perhaps they are going to work their way toward some funding announcement in the future. There may be just indication or hint about a future funding announcement that would be my best guess."

Premier Kathleen Wynne's northern Ontario tour started in Sudbury over the weekend and has made several stops throughout the region.

The visit has included community events with Liberal MPPs, tours of various facilities, and funding announcements.

Tabachnick says it's the job of a premier or prime minister to visit all regions they represent.

The federal cabinet retreat is set to take place in Sudbury between August 20 and 22.
