Sudbury Superstore to open 24-hours during holidays

At least one retail store in Sudburyhasalready respondedto Sudbury city council's move to scrapthe bylaws regulating store hours on a regular shopping week, as well as Boxing Day and August Civic Holiday.

A spokesperson for Real Canadian Superstore said the New Sudburylocation plans to be open 24 hours during the holidays andfrom 7 a.m. Friday to 6 p.m. on Christmas Eve. After that, the store will keep daily hours of 7a.m. to 11p.m.

The business community in Sudbury hadmixed reactions to city council's decision to deregulate store hours.

John Querney, who owns Querney's Office Plus and worked with a campaign to see the bylaws repealed, said he is pleased with city council's decision.

"I did a presentation 20 years ago to the regional council. So I've been looking for this for 20 years now. I just don't want council telling me how to run my business. So, it's now been decided," he said.

However, former Sudbury business owner Tony Anselmo saidthe change will be hard on small businesses.

"Small, independent people can't compete with the big guys as it is. And now you add to the mix that they have to be there longer hours, making less money. It just doesn't work," he said.
