Sudbury's Dean 'DJ' Hancock, 18, killed in multi-vehicle crash

Provincial police are reporting Sudbury resident Dean Maxwell Junior Hancock, 18, is dead after a pickup truck going west on Highway 17 collided head-on with two east-bound vehicles.

Hancock played for the Nickel Capital Wolves midget hockey team. The general manager of the team in Sudbury said members are grieving together this afternoon.

Albert Corradinialso said there's a team try-out tonight.

"Every bone in my body really doesn't want to go out to the rink tonight. But we've let our guys know if they need to come and talk that the rink is going to be open a little early and guys are going to be around," he said.

"I know I've gotten messages from a lot of guys, past and present, who are going to come out."

Corradini says he's trying to arrange for a grief counsellor to come to the rink this evening.

He saidHancock was returning from a tryout for the Sudbury Nickel Barons hockey team when the crash happened.

Provincial police report the crash was on the south-west bypass between Southview Drive and Fielding Road in Walden.

The crash, which happened about midnight Thursday,involved acar and another pickup truck that were travelling east.

Police said Hancockwas pronounced dead at the scene.

The 39-year-old driver of the west-bound pickup had non-life-threatening injuries and wasreleased from hospital. Police report hehas been charged with breach of conditions from an unrelated incident.

The driver of the east-bound truck has been treated and released.

Policeclosed the highway in both directions,but reopened it around 9 a.m.

The investigation is continuing, police said.
