Statistics Canada released its crime numbers recently, and although the country as a whole saw a slight increase in the crime severity index and the overall crime rate, Greater Sudbury's crime rate dropped.

It's the first time in 12years there were increases in both areas across the country.

Paul Pedersen, Sudbury's Chief of Police, said that the numbers show that Sudbury is a relatively safe community.

"Sudbury has adopted a model of community safety and well-being that includes working at those highest risk cases through Community Mobilization Sudbury, through our risk management table," Pedersen said."I really think it's starting to show some dividends across the board."

Pedersen said the most significant decrease seen in Sudbury was property crime, which went down by 10%.

"[Sudbury residents are] putting locks on their doors, they're using alarms," Pedersen said, "it's a combination of all of these things that really helps prevent crime from happening in the first place and that's where we can see a crime trend go down."
