Fire at St. Andrew's Place in Sudbury, Ont., displaces 18 people

One person was transported to hospital and 18 people were evacuated from their apartments after a fire at St. Andrew's Place in Sudbury, Ont., on Monday evening.

Jesse Oshell, the city's deputy fire chief, said they received a call around 5 p.m. that there was a fire in a fourth-floor apartment in the building.

"We obviously were on scene very quickly from our downtown location," he said.

Oshell said fire crews were able to contain the fire to that apartmentand get it under control within 35 to 40 minutes.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, Oshell saidone person who was trying to escape the apartment was in distress. Firefighters got that person outand they were later transported to hospital.

Oshell said paramedics treated two other people on the scene.

He said he estimates damage to the building would be in the six-figure range, with some smoke damage in the upper floors.

Floors below the apartment got some water damage, he said, from efforts to extinguish the fire.

Oshell praised the building's management team for their response and fire preparedness.

"The building management team had a great fire safety plan," he said.

"They knew where everyone was, and which apartment, and we were able to prioritize individuals who needed assistance to evacuate."

He added that while the fire spread quickly, a rapid response from the fire department meant it was contained to the single apartment.
