Salvation Army needs volunteers for Sudbury kettle campaign

The annual Salvation Army kettle campaign is underway for another year.

But the organization says it doesn't have enough volunteers yet to keep the bells ringing through the entire holiday season.

Campaign co-ordinator Barbara McNichol said it takes 55 volunteers each day to run the 11 kettles in Sudbury.

Many of them really look forward to this. Some of them bring out their grandchildren. Some of them just enjoy getting out and seeing their community. Getting the smiling faces that come by, saying hi to their neighbours and doing something for their community.

Money raised through the kettles in Sudbury goes to Salvation Army services in the city for children and families.

McNichol said some communities are starting to pay people to run the kettles, but Sudbury has always found enough volunteers.

There's five, two-hour shifts at each kettle, every day, and we try to have all of them out and all of them full throughout the day.
