The race to be the New Democratic Party's candidate for the Sudbury riding in the 2018 provincial election is heating up.

Jamie West, a long-time Vale employee and president of the Sudbury and District Labour Council, announced he will be vying for the nomination.

Local arts and film activist Beth Mairs is also seeking the nod.

Liberal Glenn Thibeault won a 2015 byelection in the riding, beating out NDP candidate Suzanne Shawbonquit by just over 1,500 votes.

The NDP will hold their nomination meeting June 26.
