Chiefs lecture to address First Nations housing

Mushkegowuk Council Grand Chief Stan Louttit will speak on housing and the quality of life in Cree communities as the keynote speaker of Laurentian Universitys social justice lecture series.

Louttit, who will speak Wednesday evening in Sudbury, helps lead the political organization, which represents First Nations people of Attawapiskat, Kashechewan, Fort Albany, Moose Factory, Taykwa Tagamou (formerly New Post), Chapleau Cree and Missanabie Cree First Nations.

Louttit has been active in local and regional issues as an administrator and elected politician for over 25 years. He is known for his advocacy work on housing, clean water, resource extraction and other issues affecting the lives of First Nations people in the Mushkegowuk territory. Louttit will give three lectures with the intent to address issues such as housing and the financial situation in Attawapiskat and other Cree communities, as well as the continuing impact of treaties and the residential school system.

The lectures, which are free of charge will run:

  • Wednesday, March 14, 7 p.m., Fraser Auditorium, Laurentian University (public lecture).
  • Thursday, March 15, 10 a.m. the NSwakamok Native Friendship Centre, 110 Elm St., Sudbury (community dialogue).
  • Thursday, March 15, 2:30 p.m. in Canisius Hall, University of Sudbury (student lecture).
