15 Mackenzie Street: before and after CBC Sudbury

CBC Sudbury is on the move!

Friday is the last day CBC will broadcast from 15 Mackenzie Street. On Monday, December 14, all programming will come from the CBC's new location, at 43 Elm Street.

While CBC Sudbury has always been in the same building during its 37-year history, its address hasn't always been 15 Mackenzie Street.

The street between the corner of Elgin and the old Sudbury Star building was known as Fir Street until 1984, as was the laneway continuing onto Frood Road (now known as Evergreen Street).

That made the CBC's address 15 Fir Street when it first signed-on the airin 1978. Up until then, the building had been known as the "Anzil Block" or "Anzilbuilding".

Louis Anzil built it in 1968 and it was an office building for realtors, doctors, dentists and for employees of the newly formed regional governmentin the mid-1970s, who would soon move over to what is today known as Tom Davies Square.

Anzil and his family lived in the two-story brick house off Fir Lane, which is also now part of the CBC station.

The building's new owner is a holding company with several investors, some of whom are also the owners of several other properties in the neighbourhood, including the old Cambrian Foundationbuilding and Sudbury Star building, whichhave both been converted to office complexes.

The new owners say they have no immediate plans for the CBC building, but there is apparently interest from a film company to use it as a set in the coming months.
