Candidates ready for Sault Ste. Marie byelection

The table is set for Sault Ste. Marie's provincial byelection.

Ontario's three major political parties have each selected a candidate to represent them in the contest, which will be called by Premier Kathleen Wynne before June.

Liberal MPP David Orazietti stepped down in December, prompting the byelection.

Former Sault mayor Debbie Amaroso is the latest to throw her hat in the ring, and is expected to be formally acclaimed as the Liberal candidate at the party's next meeting Saturday afternoon.

City councillor Ross Romano will be representing the Progressive Conservatives, while another councillor, Joe Krmpotich, has been nominated to be the NDP candidate.

Wynne's Liberal government has come under fire for rising hydro rates, skyrocketing rents and housing prices, and a prominent member of the Ontario Liberals said he believed the party was in danger of losing the 2018 election unless Kathleen Wynne stepped down.
