The next Ontario election may be a year away, but a candidate has stepped forward in the Sudbury riding, announcing her intention to run for the New Democrats in 2018.

Beth Mairs, who is active in the Sudbury independent film community, confirmed on Thursday she is seeking the party's nomination. Mairs posted the news on Facebook and issued a written release.

On her website, Mairs said she has worked in a number of fields, including on anti-poverty initiatives in the 1980s, followed by 20 years as an entrepreneur.

Mairs's campaign launch event is scheduled for April 27. Sudbury NDP members will chose their candidate at a nomination meeting on June 26.

The Sudbury riding is currently held by Ontario Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault for the Liberals.
