The city of Greater Sudbury is looking to save taxpayers some money by getting rid of some of its 600 buildings.

But to save money, it is first spending money on a consultant.

The city has hired a company called MHPM Project Managers to decide which buildings it needs and which ones it doesn't.

The firm is being paid $96,000 to do the work, which involves combing through the inventory of city-owned buildings everything from parking lot attendant booths to arenas.

In 2012, a staff report zeroed in on 46 buildings the city could do without, including several in the outlying areas that are leased to local service clubs and health clinics.

But the city now says that the focus has turned to 24 sites, most of them public works and parks depots.

Outgoing mayor Marianne Matichuk and many former city councillors viewed selling off buildings as a key way to cut costs.

The consultants report will be debated by Sudbury city council early in the new year.
