Teens killed in car crash went to Bethlehem Catholic High School

CBC News has learned that the two teenage victims, and a third person who has life-threatening injuries, went to Bethlehem Catholic High School.

The two victims, a boy and a girl, killed last night in a dramatic Saskatoon crash were both 17 years old.The girl in hospital is 16 years old.

There is a tragic response team at the school. Tributes to the students were flooding social media this morning.

Truck crashes

This tragedy began as police tried to stop what they say was a stolen pick-up truck.

The driver of the truck allegedly sped away from police, crashing into two other vehicles at the intersection of Avenue M and 22nd Street West around 8 p.m. CST.

The pick-up rammed a car at high speed, pushing it up onto its side and into a building.Saskatoon police tweeted that the event took 18 seconds.

"It definitely was not a high-speed chase," Saskatoon Police Service chief Clive Weighill said.

Police said the keys were in the truck at the time it was allegedlystolen.

"Such a senseless, meaningless happening last night," Weighill said. "I can't even talk about the frustration I'm facing being the chief of police in Saskatoon with the amount of stolen vehicles we're seeing."

"We've repeatedly asked people not to leave keys in their cars. Over 70 per cent of the cars that are getting stolen in the city right now have the keys left in the vehicle."

Suspects face charges

Today, a 17-year-old girl and a 21-year-old woman face numerous charges. They were also hurt in the crash, but police said in a news release that they have since been released from hospital and are now in custody.

Saskatoon police tweeted that both suspects have been charged previously in relation to stolen vehicles. The 21-year-old woman was the driver of the vehicle, police said.
