Inmate, 18, seriously injured in stabbing at Saskatoon jail

An 18-year-old man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being stabbed in a fight between inmates at the Saskatoon Provincial Correctional Centre Thursday night.

Police were called to the facility at 910 60th Street East at about 7:30 p.m. CST.

Two men, aged 18 and 23, have been arrested and charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and aggravated assault.

Both were expected to appear at the Saskatoon Provincial Court on Friday, August 23.

Police, corrections say too early to release details

The Ministry of Corrections said in a written response to questions that the inmate is still in hospital.

"The primary concern in any of the province's correctional facilities is the safety and security of staff, inmates and the facility itself," said the written response.

"As per our standard practice, we will review the incident to determine if policy and protocols were followed and if they need to be changed going forward."

Responses from the ministry and police did not address questions about the circumstances of the stabbing, where in the jail it occurred, whether guards were present or the type of weapon.

Saskatoon police said it will not provide further information because theinvestigation is ongoing.
