SGI responds to Uber inquiries

Saskatchewan might be jumping on the Uber bandwagon.

"As the administrator of the Auto Fund, we need to ensure that anybody transporting passengers for hire meets the required standards for both safety and insurance," said SGI spokesperson Kelley Brinkworth.

She said the app-based ride-booking company has already had an initial meeting with the provincial insurance company.

"We do have regulations in place already that outline what requirements would come into play if you did want to transport passengers for money," said Brinkworth.

According to the crown corporation, the requirements would be similar to that of a taxi. This includes a class 4 licence, PT insurance, and liability insurance for $1 million.

"So at this point, we are not looking at changing regulations," said Brinkworth. "We're going to be watching with interest to how municipalities are responding to [ride-booking]companies that are coming into their jurisdictions and then we'll see how things unfold."

SGI hasn't planned any future meetings with Uber at the moment.
