Saskatoon to review pond safety following death of 5-year-old

The City of Saskatoon met with the Saskatoon Public School Division Friday to discuss how to improve safety near schools following the death of a student in a pond near Dundonald School on Monday.

The City of Saskatoon met with the Saskatoon Public School Division Friday to discuss how to improve safety near schoolsfollowing the death of a student in a pond nearDundonaldSchool on Monday.

Five-year-old Ahmedsadiq Elmmi was found ina retention pond in a municipal park adjacent to the school after he went missing during morning recess.

According to an email statement from Angela Gardiner, acting general manager of transportation and utilities for the municipality, city staff have started a comprehensive review of Saskatoon's stormponds.

The review covers "the infrastructure, the design and our policies for maintenance everything pertaining to the storm ponds to make sure they are safe for all users and all residents in Saskatoon," she said.

The Office of the Chief Coroner is currently investigating the incident, as is the province's child and youth advocate.
