Saskatoon police use Taser on suspect swinging hammer

Two officers received minor injuries in a struggle with man wielding a hammer late Wednesday night.

Saskatoon police used a Taser on a suspect they say was swinging a hammer at officers late Wednesday night.

Members of the police's gunsand gangs unit went to a home in the 500 block of Whitewood Crescent about 11 p.m. to arrest a man on a charge of uttering threats.

When the suspect was told he was under arrest, police say, he picked up a hammer and began swinging it at the officers. Police say a struggle ensued and officers used a Taseron the man.

The suspect was assessed by paramedics but didn't require treatment. Two officers received minor injuries during the arrest.

Investigators found a shotgun and ammunition they say were hidden in the home.

The accused, 28,is facing 11 charges including two counts of assault, two counts of uttering threatsand two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon.

The incident will be reviewed under police policy.
