Province's formidable women's football teams face off tonight in Saskatoon

Saskatchewan's two powerhouse women's football teams face off in Saskatoon Saturday night.

The SaskatoonValkyrieswill host the Regina Riot at the Saskatoon Minor Football Field.

Valkyries co-captain Tori Giles is looking forward to the game.

"After months and months of training, it's nice to get out there and start hitting some people other than your teammates," she told Saskatchewan Weekend host Peter Mills Saturday morning.

Both teams have started the new season of theWestern Women's Canadian Football League on strong footing.

The Riot dominated their first game of the season, againstManitoba Fearless, with a score of 41-0, while the Valkyrieswon their recent game against the Winnipeg Wolfpackwith a score of 46-7.

"We've luckedout with some of the best coaches I've ever met," said Giles of her team. "It's not a surprise that we have 50-plus women every yearthat would love to come out and try it."

The league is into its seventh year, but some people in Saskatoon still react with surprise when hearing of a league where women tackle women, said Giles.

"Oh, definitely," she said. "It's really fun having conversations with people. That look on their faces when you tell them,'Oh yeah, I play women's tacklefootball.' They're like, 'What?'

"People just don't know, and once you tell them they get very excited about it."

The kickoff for Saturday'sgame is at 7 p.m. CST.
