Safety measures coming for Sask. Children's Hospital after forklift crash

The Saskatoon Health Region and Graham Construction have unveiled new safety measures at the construction site for the Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan.

Work was halted last week when a forklift hit a window at the Royal University Hospital's day surgery department. Saskatoon Health Region said no one was injured in the incident.

On Monday, Saskatoon Health Region and Graham Construction introduced new safety measures as work resumes. Among them are:

• Creating a "control zone" between the construction area and the existing hospital
• Plywood will be placed across windows of Royal University Hospital thatfacing the construction site on the ground and main floors.
• Risk assessment for each construction worker will be expanded when working near the hospital
• Establishing a safety committee among Graham Construction and Saskatoon Health Region personnel.

Tom Holfield, district manager with Graham Construction said officials are "confident" in the new measures being taken.

"We're going to be protecting our workforce and the public around us," Holfield added.

Construction of the Children's Hospital of Saskatchewan is slated to be finished in 2019.
