The city is looking at buying downtown buildings to accommodate its growing need for office space.

And the mayor hopes to pay for the new space by selling some old space.

Topping the "for sale" list is the current police station on4th Avenue. The force is getting ready to move into its new building.

The city hopes to net $15 million for the vacated property. Mayor Don Atchison says the city has done well by buying existing buildings.

"Most of the properties that the City of Saskatoon has bought have been good investments for the city, they have always turned up reasonably well for us," Atchison said.

"If you look at what a new facility today would cost us, it would be more expensive than buying the existing facility."

The city is eyeing a new building and a couple of parking lots on4th and5th Avenue owned by Vecima Networks.

The city's executive council will vote on the plan to buy the properties on Monday.
