Firefighters respond to grass fire south of Saskatoon

Saskatoon fire trucks rushed out of the city to Highway 60 Thursday afternoon to respond to a brush and grass fire that was getting close to some rural homes.

The fire department received a call at around 3:45 p.m. CST that a grass fire was getting close to some structures on an acreage located five miles south on the Pike Lake Highway.

Despite the wind, fire crept away from the acreage towards a neighbour's property, following the dry grass.

Fire crews were able to stop the structures from lighting up and the flames were brought under control in about 90 minutes.

Fire crews remained in the area longer to make sure that there would not be any flare ups. Crews told CBC that the fire was a challenge because there was no nearby water source and they had to balance putting out the fire with protecting property.

The Saskatoon Fire Department is reminding people that controlled burns during dry conditions can get out of control rapidly.
