Saskatchewan residents are being invited to fast with a Muslim friendduring the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which started on June 6.

The Saskatoon branch of Islamic organization Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at is inviting the public to join Muslims around the world who are fasting as part of the 30-day spiritual event.

Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama`at said in a press release the campaign was about sharing the Ramadan experience and connecting with non-Muslims.

"As we enter the holy month of Ramadan, I invite my fellow Canadians to experience the spiritual uplifting provided by Ramadan and take part in this unique campaign," said AhmadiyyaMuslim Jama`at Canadapresident Lal Khan Malik.

Fasting aims to teach self-control and discipline, and inspire awareness of those who are less fortunate. When the fast is over, Muslims celebrate with a three-day festival of eating calledEidal-Fitr.

Members of the Baitur-Rahmat Mosque in Saskatoon also promoted the campaign last year.
