Executive Committee shelves Saskatoon prayer debate

The prayer debate at City Hall in Saskatoon has been shelved.

Today city council'sexecutive committee voted to accept a report done by the city solicitor as information. This essentially tables the issue and moves it nofurther.

The issue began when Saskatoon activist, Ashu Solo, complained about public prayer at city events. He said his rights were infringed when city councillor Randy Donauer said a prayer at a civic event. Solo filed the complaint with the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission.

After months of deliberating, the city's administration proposed a non-denominational greeting in place of prayer. It was a move Solo supported as well.

Instead executive committee has tabled the matter.

Solo saidhe will now go ahead with the human rights complaint. He expects it will be heardnear the end of December.
