Cyclists in downtown Saskatoon will soon have their own bike lane.

Starting in the spring, 23rd Street will have dedicated, protected bike lanes.

Cycling groups are happy with the plan. However, the downtown bus mall proves to be a major obstacle.

"It's illegal to bike through the bus mall," said Saskatoon Cycles founder Sean Shaw. "Actually, it's really dangerous with all the buses and pedestrians. So, cyclists will have to get off their bike and walk through it."

Shaw hopes a detour for cyclists can be found before the lanes are set up.

The plan still needs to be approved by city committee and council.

A plan for a dedicated bike lane on 4th Avenue has been delayed for a year due to pending repairs on the University Bridge.
