Voting in Saskatchewan underway

It's municipal election day in Saskatchewan and thousands of people are heading to the polls to elect new mayors, councillors and school board trustees.

It's municipal election day in Saskatchewan and thousands of people are heading to the polls to elect new mayors, councillors and school board trustees.

Votes are being cast in hundreds of cities, towns and villages.

In Regina, there was a steady stream of people at some polling stations, but the numbers were lighter than expected in others, according to observers.

At one polling station in the city's core neighbourhood, there was a trickle of grey-haired residents heading for the voting booths.

A strong turnout would be a good thing and people should make the effort, senior citizen Maria Dobrowolski said.

"People should care about their city," she said. "Maybe people will come out because the city is growing and there are a lot of things going on."

Down the street from where Dobrowolski was voting, huddled in a bus shelter, three young men said they didn't plan to cast ballots.

Lenny Lonechild said he's watched some of the news coverage, but believes city hall doesn't affect him.

"I just don't vote, that's it," he said. "They never made no change in my life."

There's still a few hours left if Lonechild changes his mind. Polls close at 8 p.m. CT.

CBC Saskatchewan's websitewill be publishing results and running a live blog throughout the evening. There will also be radio coverage on Radio 1 at 8, 9, 10 and 11 p.m.and a TV update at 10:55 p.m.
