Violence against RCMP isolated incidents, says top Sask. Mountie

The head of the RCMP in Saskatchewan says recent attacks on officers in the province's north should not be viewed as anything more than isolated incidents.

The head of the RCMP in Saskatchewan says recent attacks on officers in the province's north should not be viewed as anything more than isolated incidents.

"These are not an indicator of an escalation of violence of our members here in Saskatchewan," Assistant Commissioner Russ Mirasty said Thursday at news conference at the RCMP's Saskatchewan headquarters in Regina.

Mirasty added the incidents, in La Loche and at the Red Earth First Nation, werenot connected.

He said the RCMPenjoysgood relationships with the province's First Nations communities.

A week ago, in the northern community of La Loche an angry mob of people allegedly attacked RCMP officers and health care workers. A police vehicle was set ablaze in that case.

Earlier this week, RCMP officers said they were shot at while investigating a report of shots fired on the Red Earth First Nation, northeast of Saskatoon.
