Saskatoon ponders vehicle levy

Vehicle registration could cost Saskatoon motorists more if a couple of city councillors get their way.

Vehicle registration could cost Saskatoon motorists more if a couple of city councillors get their way.

Pat Lorje and Darren Hill areproposing a new levy.

Hill has a two or three per cent levy in mind, that might cost $20 or $30 per vehicle each year, raising $2 million.

Lorje wants to spend the money on more traffic sound walls, while Hill wants to catch up on city road maintenance.

Hillsays a levy is more fair than hiking property taxes.

"To have the infrastructure deficit funded simply by property tax is not fair for those people that do not drive or those people that maybe only have one vehicle registered to an entire family in a household," Hill said.
