Saskatchewan CIS report: Huskies hockey, basketball No. 1 in Canada

University of Saskatchewan Huskies fans have a lot to celebrate on the hardwood and ice this season.

Going into this weekend, both the Huskies women's basketball team and the men's hockey team were ranked No. 1 in the country.

Here is the latest university sports news in Saskatoon and Regina:

Women's basketball: Huskies remain undefeated

Lisa Thomaidis knows a thing or two about basketball.

After helping lead Canada to a gold medal at the Pan Am Games this summer, the U of S head coach has her team off to one its best starts in team history.

On Friday, the Huskies improved to 8-0 with a 71-53 win over Trinity Western in B.C.

Saskatoon's Kelsey Trulsrud led the Huskies with 16 points, while three others Desarae Hogberg, Sabine Dukate andDalyce Emmerson also scored12 or more points.

The Huskies are now off for the holidays. They'll return to action on Jan. 8 in Calgary.

Thomaidis and the Huskies will return home on Friday, Jan. 15 against the University of Lethbridge.

Men's hockey: Huskies suffer only 3rd loss

Forget theRegina Cougars, the Huskies men's hockey team have a new Cougars rival in Mount Royal University.

On Friday, the No. 1-ranked Huskies lost 5-3 in Saskatoon to No. 10-ranked Mount Royal.

It was only the third loss of the season for Dave Adolph and the Huskies, who are now 12-3 on the season. However, all three losses have come at Rutherford Rink in Saskatoon. The Huskies remain 7-0 on the road.

Levi Cable, a first-year forward from Hudson Bay, Sask., added his team-best ninth goal of the season.

Adolph and the Huskies will look to enter the holiday break on a high note. They'll have a chance for revenge against the Huskies tonight at 7 p.m. at Rutherford.

Mitch Hillis named CIS All-Canadian

The football season didn't go the way the Huskies had hoped, but as far as individual performances, 2015 couldn't have been much better for Mitch Hillis.

The Saskatoon-nativewas one the best receivers in the country finishing third in the CIS with 1,052 receiving yards and this week he was honoured for his breakout season.

Hillis, who finished his third year with the Huskies, was named a first-team CIS All-Canadian alongside the rest of the best football talents in Canada.

Teammate Donovan Dale a fourth-year defensive lineman from Saskatoon was named a second-team All-Canadian.
