Sask. pitcher Andrew Albers aims for Blue Jays' bullpen

Andrew Albers is on his way to try tosuit up for the Toronto Blue Jays.

The North Battleford, Sask. pitcher is heading down to the Blue Jays' spring training camp in Florida to work on earning a spot.

In an interview on CBC's Saskatchewan Weekend, Albers said he has been cheering for the team since he was a kid, while the Blue Jays won the World Series in 1992 and 1993.

"I certainly remember those teams and the guys on those teams and I was certainly a huge fan growing up," said Albers.

He also said that the prospect is especially exciting since Toronto is the only Canadian team in Major League Baseball. He knows he will have to compete hard to earn a position. At this point, he saidhe's "on the outside looking in" and he'll have to work hard to compete with all the other Jays pitchers.

"It's a great opportunity, and one that I'm really excited about," said Albers.

Albers, who pitched10 starts with the Minnesota Twins two years ago,played in South Korea last year and had to wait until that season ended to become a free agent.

"My agent and I, wesent an email out to the teams that we thought would be a good fit, and the Jays happened to be one of those ball clubs," Albers explained. "They got back to us, being interested, along with a few other teams."

The Blue Jays signed Albersin December 2014 to to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
