Police use Taser on man, 48, who barricaded himself in room

Regina police used a Taser on a man Thursday who was allegedly using illegal drugs and threatening to do self-harm.

Police were called to Schemmer Bay in northeast Regina at about 12:57 a.m. CST. Officers received a report that a man was in possession of a knife and threatening self-harm.

As police were en route, another report suggested the man was allegedly using illegal drugs.

When officers arrived, the man had barricaded his bedroom.

According to police, the 48-year-old was very upset and appeared to have something clenched in both of his hands.

One of the officers used a stun gun, but it deflected off the suspect's clothing. A second officer then used his stun gun and the suspect was eventually arrested.

When the suspect refused EMS, he was taken to hospital.

The man now faces charges related to his alleged drug possession and damage to the apartment.

The officer's use of a Conducted Energy Weapon will be reviewed by the Police Service.
