Regina group rallies in support of protesters in Venezuela

A small group of people from Venezuela marched to the legislative building in Regina over the weekend to show their support for protesters in their country.

"It's hard when we talk to friends here and they say, 'What's happening in Venezuela?' because they are not aware of what is happening in our country," said Karen Quiroz-Norman, who moved to Canada seven years ago.

"So, we feel that probably we haven't done our job of informing people of what's going on. And if we don't do it nobody else is going to do it for us."

The anti-government demonstrations have turned violent in Caracas, the country's capital, where tens of thousands protesters have gathered. The violence has left at least 10 people dead and more than 100 injured.

Adriana Garcia, who moved to Canada 10 years ago, was also at the Regina demonstration.

"It's injustice in Venezuela," she said. "What the government is doing to all the Venezuelan people is not right. They're taking our human rights, our freedom of speech away from us and that's not right," she said.

"We don't see things getting any better," said Quiroz-Norman. "We see all of the students protesting for all the violence and the crime situations that are happening, and what we see is the president sending the army on the street to attack its own people."

Quiroz-Norman says she fears for the safety of herrelatives in Venezuela who are taking part in the demonstrations.

"It's scary because you never know what is going to happen to one of your family members, so every time we hear that phone ringing it's scary," she said.

The group wants Canada to take a stand against the violence in Venezuela.

The group plans to make a video that tells each of their personal stories of government corruption they suffered in their country. They will post it online when it's finished.
