Regina's 'cricket cop' making fans on the field and Facebook

A Regina police officer really bowled over members of the cricket community on the weekend when he hopped off his bike and joined in an impromptu game.

It happened at Central Park south of the downtown, where a group of friends regularly gathersfor cricket games.

Const. Mitch Wiebe was on bike patrol, but when he got an invitation from the players, he grabbed the bat for a few minutes.

"It was really good experience to bowl an officer," Dipen Shah said on Facebook. "He was not bad at cricket."

"It was fun. Thanks for stopping by, talking to us and playing for a bit," added Tejas Upadhyay in a comment.

They call him 'cricket cop'

Since the weekend, photos of the officer dubbed Cricket Cop have been making the rounds on social media.

"People like to see this," said Kimberly Schmidt, the police service's social media officer. "We got lots of shares on Facebook, over 700 likes and more than 30 comments."

Meanwhile, the cricket players hope to spread the word about their beloved game. They say anyone else who's interested in learning more about cricket should drop by Central Park on the weekend for a demonstration.
