Police probe of high school gun threat finds no danger

Police say there was no danger to two Regina high schools, Balfour and Miller, which were the focus of attention Wednesday afternoon following a possible gun threat.

Police say there was no danger to two Regina high schools, Balfour and Miller, which were the focus of attention Wednesday afternoon following a possible gun threat.

"There was never a weapon seen," police said in a statement Wednesday afternoon announcing that the incident was over.

Police said the episode began when one Balfour student made some sort of comment about another student, which police believe was untrue.

The comment was brought to the attention of police around 2:15 CST Wednesday. They said their investigationincluded tracking down one student who was not in the school and learning there was no danger.

"The threat of a weapon is unfounded," police said.

Balfour and Miller are side by side. Officers were sent to both to help the schools communicate with investigators.

A spokeswoman for the police, Elizabeth Popowich, said there was a brief lockdown of the schools, limiting access to the buildings. That was eased and schools were made secure.

"The secure-building protocols were enacted in the best interests of the safety of the school students and staff," Popowich said. "These procedures unfolded exactly as they should."

Popowich said the investigation was ongoing and police had not determined if any charges, such as public mischief, would be laid.
