Pats centre named top CHL scorer

Regina Pats centre Sam Steel, who finished the season as the top scorer in the WHL, has been recognized as the CHL's top scorer as well.

On Saturday, the Canadian Hockey League announced the 10 national award winners for the 2016-17 season.

Steel helps Pats through historic year of hockey

Steel brought home the Chrysler Top Scorer Award.

The Anaheim Ducks prospect led the CHL with 131 points in 66 games. He scored 50 goals and 81 assists, helping the Regina Pats to a first place finish in the WHL's regular season.

The Pats finished a historic season on May 14, falling tothe Seattle Thunderbirds in Game 6of the WHL championship series.It was thefirst time the teamhad an opportunity to play for the WHL's Ed Chynoweth Cup since 1984.

The 19-year-old from Sherwood Park,Alta., finished with the CHL's highest point total since BrendanShinniminof theTri-CityAmericans recorded 134 points in 69 games in 2011-2012.

He beat out AlexDeBrincatof the Erie Otters with 127 points in 63 games, andVitaliiAbramovof theGatineauOlympiqueswho scored 104 points in 66 games this season.

Steelwasn't the only WHL winner of the evening, with Nolan Patrick of the Brandon Wheat Kings taking home the Sherwin-Williams Top Prospect Award and Tyler Wong of theLethbridgeHurricanes winning theMastercardHumanitarian of the Year Award.

The awards were presented as part of the 2017MastercardMemorial Cup festivities in Windsor.
