Norwalk outbreak expanding, health region says

The Norwalk virus outbreak that hit a Yorkton nursing home earlier this month appears to be spreading.

The Norwalk virus outbreak that hit a Yorkton nursing home earlier this month appears to be spreading.

Dozens of people were reported sick at the Yorkton and District Nursing Home two weeks ago, complaining of nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms.

Now, a seniors facility in nearby Canora is reporting people suffering from intestinal sickness.

The Sunrise Health Region said Thursday that the Canora Gateway Lodge is in outbreak status. As well, the Yorkton Regional Health Centre has been put on alert.

At the nursing home and lodge, visits are restricted and people are being told not to bring in food.

The virus is found in the fecal matter of infected people and can be spreadby touchingcontaminated objects like doorknobs and stair railings.

The health region says frequent hand washing is one wayto keep the virus from spreading.

Last week, a Norwalkoutbreak made more than 30 people sick at Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert. Some surgeries had to be cancelled.
