Trial of Regina couple charged with killing 4-year-old girl to resume Tuesday

Fourteen jurors wereselected today and had their first sittingforthe trial of a Regina couple, accused of killing afour-year-old girl in 2012.

Kevin and TammyGoforthare charged with the second-degree murder of the girl, as well as unlawfully causing bodily harm to atwo-year-old girl.

At the time, the girlswere being looked after by the Goforths, who are not theirparents.

On Monday afternoon the court heard the agreed statement of facts and medical appointment records for the two girls.

The raw emotion was visibile in thecourt room.Tammy Goforthwiped her eyes andvisibly shook as lawyers spoke.

The jurors were selected Monday morning. The judge said14 jurorsensures there are 12 people to deliberate.

Girl 'was skin and bones'

The victim'smothersaidwhen she was called to the hospital in the summer of 2012, she was horrified by the state her four-year-old daughter was in.

"She was skin and bones," the mothersaid."She was bleeding from her wrists and her ankles."

The charges against the Goforths were upgraded by Saskatchewan's deputy attorney general in January of 2014, after reviewingevidence presented in a preliminary hearing.

A publication ban is in place and prevents the identification of the two girls.

The crown is expectedto call 16 witnessesduring a trial that could take three weeks.

Court was adjourned for the day shortly after 4 p.m. and will resume Tuesday morning.
