Menopause the Musical in Saskatoon to squeeze laughter out of hot sweats and mood swings

When women come out from a sitting of Menopause The Musical, they'll often say their cheeks hurt from laughing, while men sometimes come out understanding their wives and partners a bit better, says a producer for the show.

"We just all feel alive and feel the warmth. It's wonderful. And it's so good to laugh," said Janet Martin, who does double-duty as a cast member in the musical that's coming to Saskatoon this week.

The musical features four women, from different walks of life, all meeting in the lingerie department of Bloomingdale's and discovering they share one thing in common menopause.

Over the course of the production, they harmonize their way through musical hits from past decades, and channel their frustrations with mood swings, hot sweats and sleepless nights into the songs.

Stayin' Alive transforms into Stayin' Awake, while Puff the Magic Dragon becomes Puff, My God, I'm Draggin', in lyrics to which many women over a certain age can relate, said Martin.

The show is one about sisterhood, and ends with an invitation for all the women to come up and join a kickline.

"The result is we all don't feel like we're not alone in this wacky time of life," said Martin. "We're all in it together."

The cast and crew bring the show to Saskatoon's Broadway Theatre for a three-night run, starting this Monday.
