Machete attack talk of Regina's Cathedral neighbourhood

Regina's Cathedral neighbourhood residents are talking about amachete attack that happened in the area over the weekend.

"It's a little bit scary though. Maybe I'll just be a little bit more aware of my surroundings when I'm walking around by myself," said Nicole Dunn, who lives in the area.

"Sometimes I walk the dog at night so, yeah it could happen that I would be around some kind of violence but I've never experienced it," she said.

The attack happened early Sunday morning on the 2100 block of Athol Street, near the corner of 14th Avenue.

A group of men attacked a 25-year-old man with a machete and pipes, Regina police said.

Malcolm Mooresaidhe didn't expect something like this to happen in the area.

The 73-year-old was staying across the street, visiting his son at the time of the attack. He's from Scotland.

Moore was reading in his son's backyard when heheard screaming.

"I looked out over the fence and there was a guy laying in the gutter right over there, and he was being hit by another bloke with a pole," he said, gesturing to where the victim had been found.

"It's always been a quiet sort of neighbourhood," said Moore, who visits his son in Regina regularly.

"One's a bit surprised to find that sort of violence going on, really, in this part of the world," he said.

Suspect identified

By mid-afternoon Monday, Regina police had identified a suspect in the attack.

Daniel Larose, 20, of Regina is wanted on a province-wide arrest warrant for his alleged involvement in the attack, as well as for break enter & commit theft and breach of probation, according to a release issued by police.

The release described Larosemale, aboriginal, approximately6' 3" tall, weighing 225 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He hasthe name LaRosetattooed on his left forearm in cursive script.

Police also noted that the victim of the attackis recovering in hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He and Larose are apparently known to each other. Laroseapparently went to the victim's house to confront him over a personal matter, according to investigations conducted by the Reginapolice.

The police don'tbelieve Laroseposes a threat to the general public, because hisactions were deliberate and directed toward the victim.
