Inquest will examine circumstances of inmate's 2017 death at Regina Correctional Centre

A public inquest will be held this July, looking at what led up to a man dying at the Regina Correctional Centre two years ago.

The inquest into WaylonStarr's deathwill be held July 22 to 26, at the Regina Court of Queen's Bench.

Starr was found unresponsive in his cell on August 24, 2017. Medical personnel tried to perform CPRbut Starr could not be revived.

Section 20 ofThe Coroners Act, 1999, states that the Chief Coroner shall hold an inquest into the death of any inmate at a jail or a correctional facility, unless the coroner believesthe person's death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.

The purpose of an inquest is to establish who died, when and how the person died, including establishing the medical cause and manner of death.

The coroner's jury can make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
