Gas lines upgraded, Regina Beach keeping eye on ground-shifting

Officials are keeping an eye on ground-shifting at Regina Beach after some serious problems last year.

Ground shifting due to excessive moisture has caused natural gas lines to move and in some instances to leak.

Back in December, one of those leaks caused a house to explode.

SaskEnergy says it has been hard at work in the town, a popular summer vacation spot about 50 kilometres northwest of Regina, over the past several months.

Regina Beach Mayor Cameron Hart said the area is especially prone to problems after last summer's rainfall.

"We're sitting on a shale bed apparently so with the moisture, that makes it slide," he explained. "We've got two houses for sure that are going to apparently get moved away."

SaskEnergy says it has upgraded 34 gas mains in the community by making the steel lines more flexible to ground shifting.

It has also upgraded 173 connection points to homes in the Regina Beach area.
